Anthony Zizza served as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy in the mid-1940s. Born in 1907 in Massachusetts to Mr. and Mrs. Pasquale Zizza, CPO Zizza enlisted in the army in early 1943. Stationed on board the U.S.S. Mississippi, he wrote his first letter to his wife, Lily Penta. By September, his ship was at the Naval Base of Norfolk, Virginia. The U.S.S. Mississippi soon left the Norfolk Naval Yard for a five-week voyage to Cuba. While in Cuba, they anchor at Guatanamo Bay. They return to the states by way of Quinnet Point, Rhode Island in October. Zizza returned home for short visit the week his ship returned, however, he soon returned to his ship. While away, Zizza continually wrote to his family whom he missed very much. In 1946, Zizza returned home. Our collection includes only eleven letters and there are significant gaps in what we currently know about this sailor.
