Dear Dot:

First of all please excuse the fact that I’m writing this in pencil. I’m going to lay all the cards on the table. First of all I didn’t pass all my tests for the army, so I’m not going in after all. Also that school in New Jersey doesn’t open till after Labor Day, so I guess that does that.

I think you sent that picture to test me Dot. Well I guess I’m nothing, but a penny ante guy so to speak and due to financial conditions and work and so forth I guess I’ll never be able to get to Troy. I know what you will think when you read this letter. Seeing as I can’t see you and due to other circumstances I guess we might just as well break up the correspondence. I would go into more length and detail and try to explain the reasons but being a woman you wouldn’t believe me anyways.

You were really swell sending all the nice cards and letters and this may sound kind of mean doing this, but I guess it’s the only way out. I know no matter what happens you will be mad and burned up.

I’ll keep your pictures, but if you want them returned I’ll return them. As far as mine go, you can burn them up. I think you’re real nice Dot, but I guess I can’t make the grade.

So long and thanks for everything.

Love,

Joe
