My dearest Hal,

We got out package yesterday and were perfectly delighted with the things you sent us. We did have to pay duty on it however. $4.88 worth in fact. I wrote to the collector of customs but it did no good. It was worth it and we were so pleased. Sam was delighted with the elephants. They were just the things to take his eye.

If you plan to get us any rugs (and I hope you do) I believe it would be best to keep them and bring them home when you come back as your household furnishings.

I have no idea if you can get pretty linens in India or where ever you happen to be now. I want a luncheon or bridge set in grass linen. That is very thin linen with a design in very small cross-stitch. I have seen some lovely ones that came from China. If you come across any bring me one. Get a very nice one as they last practically forever. I have been told that if you get things and use them you can then bring them home after the war as your belongings and not pay any duty: is that true do you think? Many, many thanks.

All my love,
