Dearest Little “swan” Mary Ellen

        ^True Bryant style^

I got your Friday letter in tonight’s mail. It was a very nice letter dear + I have a few things in it to answer, but first I will account for some actions today. We were out on the line by 7:30 + worked until 11:00. It was pretty warm this morning, but real ___worked until 11:00. It was pretty warm this morning, but was windy. I got myself a fur lined leather coat so it was plenty warm. I get to _____ the coat until the duration. They are valued at $18.00, so I can’t afford to lose it, we had fried chicken for lunch, and it was sure good. Tonight we had meat loaf and it really hit the spot too. My lunch has to start a gas school tonight. It last one week, and is from 7 to 9 so you see I haven’t much time to right. The girl show is at 9:00 so I have to finish right now.

Darling I sent for a book for you. It is “What’s in a Name” maybe you have seen it advertised in the newspaper or magazine.  I sent for it over a week ago so you should be getting it pretty soon. Now for the better darling.

I think that the battery is just low because you have been doing a lot of just stopping and starting. A trip into town will probably fix it up. The battery is new, so it shouldn’t give you any trouble. If it does, just see Walt about it. He knows when I bought it will make good for it if it goes haywire. The apron fasteners might be in the tool box at Aunt Dally’s I think I remember putting some there. If it doesn’t get to cold, you won’t need it. The only thing it is good for is to get the motor warmed up quicker so the heater might be warm.

Darling, are you sure you should go into town alone. I don’t want to sound silly, but it bothers me a little. Even if you could take one of the girls it would make me feel better. Don’t go in unless you really have to dear. Keep the doors locked when driving because it would be easy for someone to open the door and jump in. It happened to Margurite in Billingham and she is no sissy.

You’ve sure gotten presents for everyone haven’t you dear? I don’t know what I would do without a wife to look after things while I’m gone.

You do whatever you wish about the license. I don’t think you will be using the Ford very much, but as you say, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get them. I knew the flashlight would come in handy. Be sure and put it in the car, so if you ever have to stop at night you will have a light with you.

I still haven’t heard anymore news about Douglas. We will just have to wait and see what turns up. I don’t care where they send me as long as it is in the U.S. It doesn’t do any good to worry, wonder, or wish where you are going because you will end in the same place anyway.

I would sure like to see Conty now. I can’t wait to get in and just drive and drive. When I get back I’m going to give her a thorough checking. I have learned quite a bit here and if I can just go to J.A. I will be able to really fix her up good. Does she ask about me darling. I bet she was glad to see me go, I was pretty mean to her at times.

Tell the Smiths’ hello for me, and give them my apologies for not writing. I have so many letters to write now dear that I hate to start anymore correspondence. I’ve got to drop a line to them though, along with one to Uncle Guy and grandma Upty. Just call me Groove.

Well darling I just have time to wash up and get ready for gas school. It is a school for gas warfare dear. We will learn all about the different kinds of gases and how to wear our masks etc.

            Bye darling

                        All my love
