Saturday 6:50 P.M. April 1^st-1944

Dear Hon:

We are home again, that is on the farm. We decided to come home for overnight as we are on late tomorrow. Just to get away from the house, a little excitement, is what we needed. Your Mom was glad to see us and quite surprised. We had supper and quite a chat after supper, in fact they were rather late milking because of us. Your Mom + Leo went down [to] the barn just about 10 min. ago. Gee its fun to come home. We talk so much that we get all talked out in a short while. Mary and I washed the supper dishes and now we are busy writing before they get back from the barn.

Darling before I forget, just before I left to Utica a package came for me. It was the package with the Hershey bars and prayer books in it. Thank you very much sweetheart, I was tickled to receive them. I love Hershey bars and because they are from you dear they are more so appreciated! I love you first hon, the Hershey’s come next. I brought with me 4 bars, we all picked on them until they are gone. Especially Leo. The prayers books are lovely. Especially the black + red one, darling I like it very much. I shall carry it to church with me on Sundays. I will pray on it in church tomorrow.

The wind is blowing out very swiftly. Just like a March wind. I can hear it howl as I sit here and write. Now that April is here we should get some warm weather pretty soon. It seems that this winter is terribly long You’d think that summer was never going to get here.

Now for a bit of gossip. Carl N. got his marriage license today. He is getting married 2 weeks from tomorrow. He will have three couples standing up for him. Leo is out as he did not ask him. He evidently changed his mind.

Nellie N.’s boyfriend is home from England and she may get married before Carl does. He is quite scared as he promised her a ^$100 if she got married before he did. I wonder if he will keep his promise?

McLaughelin’s is operated by its new owner, starting yesterday. Leo said that he had quite a crowd for the opening. He is the former owner of Shady Grill. He is a polish man. Z. from Vernon. Junior M. is expecting to work for him. By the way, Junior is running around with the other girl, not his wife. after being married a week he isn’t doing so well is he? Leo is very disappointed in him as [she] didn’t expect such actions from him. The other girl chases him and he chases her, he better be careful or may find himself a father of two different children.

He brings her in the hotel as if nothing ever happened, very bold I must say. I feel very sorry for his young bride she can’t be very happy being married to him.

Your dad bought a new tractor ^$1100 cash. He bought it sometime this week. He was offered ^$400 for the old one. He also sold the 2 pigs that he raised. He got ^$37 for the bigger one and ^$38 for the smaller. They figured that it would be best to sell them as they could never take care of all that meat. Your Mom canned some veal and now she expects to can beef so that should be sufficient.

We had some delicious pickled eggs tonight. Leo suggested that she pickle some as he was very fond of them. He even told her how to pickle them as he had seen them to Pete’s sister last Sunday. He eats them before they have a chance to pickle.

Darling when you come home I shall do the same for you. Do you like them dear?

Leo got another questionnaire today. It consists of questions about the farm produce. The amount of each produce was very important. Leo answered it right away and send it back. He is awaiting further notice such as to classification. after that he may make more definite plans about his wedding.

They are all back from the barn now so I cannot concentrate. Leo is very noisy as he is eating Jello with his fingers out of a kettle. He told me to say hello to you and say Keep Smiling.
