            Dear Hon:

Good evening darling.  Had quite a day today. We went home this afternoon and really surprised your Ma on her birthday.  Sylvia, Ma, Mary, and I helped her celebrate.  She was very happy to see us, as usual.  She feels much better now and is back to work. She was canning meat when we got there. They killed a calf, so we had some veal for supper, it was so very good.  Walt and Wanda sent her a beautiful card and slip to wear.  Our cards, that is Mary’s, yours and mine she didn’t get as yet but she will be just as glad to receive them tomorrow.  Better late than never, so to speak.

Sweetheart, I received 2 letters from you today, they were of Thurs. + Fri.

I was very pleased to hear that you stayed in town Thurs. night and enjoyed a good rest.  You needed it badly after riding such a long ways.  It felt good to sleep in a comfortable bed.  I’ll bet.

From all description you were very lonesome Fri.  Darling, it breaks my heart to think that you had to go back to Claiborne, but who knows dear, it may be much worse somewhere else.

You say dear that you purchased 2 engineers insignia pins for me.  I can hardly wait until I receive them.

Darling, we were very happy together for them few days but it was heartbreaking for you to leave and for me to see you go back.  Darling, if you could only realize how hard I tried to hide my feelings. I was going to be brave if it killed me and yet I kept telling myself that you had to go again and nothing in the world could help us both.  If I would let myself go I could be carrying on for weeks but what is the use dear, crying will not help win this war, might as well take it on the chin and wait patiently for that day when the world can all smile again. Our Love for each other is so much stronger and more beautiful than ever before.  It took a war to prove it to us. There must be millions like us darling, we were too blind to see.  I don’t think that I ever knew so much happiness as I did now when you were home on furlough and I know that there will be many more of them to come.

            Goodnight Sweetheart and pleasant dreams.

I Love you dear.
