July 1, 1943

The letter in this collection was written by Howard Earl Smalley, of the USS Indianapolis, to his friend, Mrs. Edith Thezan of Venice, California. The letter is dated July 1, 1943 and was written two years before the sinking of the Indianapolis. Mr. Smalley was on board the USS Indianapolis when it was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese in July 1945. He did not survive the attack.
