My dear Margarete!

On this sunny Pentecost Day, I would not want to fail to write you a few lines from far away.  Among us, we are so dull and simple, just as used to it as the population around here.  Anyway, where could we go, what could we start doing, everyone thinks about the beautiful homeland and the happy time, which hardly ever leaves one’s memory.  We are all still healthy, but where is the youth, one really does not have any of it.  But this eternal dullness will have an end.  We also know that at home not much is happening.  Dear sweetheart, believe me, we will get everything back.

What should we do when we occasionally have a little free time?  Sometimes, one really has to laugh about it.  The time when we all had a moustache is long gone.  It is quite hot here now, the sun always burns down from the sky.  Generally, one is only of the opinion that it is good if hair cut off completely.  And now it has become the style, it is really laughable at times.  I would not like to state that a bald head is attractive, I won’t go along with this, but they don’t have to be ashamed in front of anyone.  Yes dear sweetheart, it is nowhere as nice as in the homeland.  If you would also like to know where we are quartered, I’m not allowed to write it.  We also do not know what will happen but we will keep going on.

Two years ago there was a party in Hilwartshausen, do you still remember?  And shortly before that in Larenberg.  Dear sweetheart, believe me, I am always with you.  I’m going out with you again today,

            in my dreams . . . . . . . .

Would like to end my lines here and I wish you all the best and hope you had a happy festive day.

Greetings to you from far away

your, always thinking of you, loving Gustav.

Until we meet again.
