Mr. R.,

This morning I was getting Jack’s uniforms ready to send to the cleaners.  I was going through his pockets.  In one of the pockets of his green uniform I found this note.

“Dear Mother, if I don’t come back this trip will you please send Mr. R. ten dollars?  I was going to send it but didn’t do it.  He was a nice man and a real American.  Don’t you worry mother.  Love Your Son, Sgt. Jack E. Shelly.”

I was shocked.  Mr. R., don’t think bad of Jack [that] he didn’t send it sooner.  You know how these boys are when they are in the service.  I would have sent it if I would have known it.  Jack dear, he meant to be honest.  Mr. R. I am sending ten dollars with his note.  I thank you for being so nice to Jack and I will never forget such a nice friend.  I thank you.  Jack’s Mother
