My sweet darling!

I expected to receive your letter yesterday, since it takes about 7-8 days for the mail to arrive. Two of my buddies received some mail though one unfortunate kid did not. That is too bad but there is nothing one can do about that. I am often angered by the fact that letters from Braunschweig arrive so irregularly, and it seems that that will continue. I will still be here tomorrow and anxiously await your first letter.

Well, Baby, I will still be here tomorrow and the next day and maybe even longer. I am dealing with this same old topic which angers and infuriates me. But this is a long term problem which is slowly making me old and grey. If I do not do something about this soon I will lose all my hair and turn old and grey. Of course I would something if only because of my hair!

Oh darling, baby, I wish I could write you a light-hearted letter. But I cannot do it. In my mind everything seems so grey, all the happy thoughts have been drawn out of me and I am left with only sad ones. It would be no fun for you to read about that. But since you are the only one I have, you have to listen to this.

You are the only one I can tell about how lonely and unhappy I am about the distance between us. Baby, believe me when I say I am a very, very dad little rabbit. I know that you are equally as unhappy as me and it worries me.

Hey, what have we done and why are we doing so poorly? The only positive feeling I have is the love I have for you. I have had so many happy and wonderful thoughts about my great love for you. Baby, my life would not be worth living if I did not know that you were at home waiting for me. THat is why I look forward to a beautiful and happy future. These thoughts make me want to kiss your lips deeply, and in my eyes I will always be yours,

Georg

Translator’s notes:

Georg seems very sad and lonely and is angry about his ongoing tour of duty. He’s anxiously awaiting mail from his girlfriend, Thea Bohn. Georg Karl is an “Unteroffizier” (lower officer) with an identification number of 082. The reference to a rabbit might mean he is in a rabbit hole at his place of battle, perhaps the Russian front. He, or at least his girlfriend, are from the German city of Braunschweig (Brunswick), but according wo the letter she has resettled in a smaller town called Schulerode (sp.?).
