Norman Herold was born January 2, 1909 in Baltimore, Maryland. He completed grammar school and was a shipping clerk before he enlisted in the military in 1943 at the age of 34. He started out serving in the 432nd AAF Base Unit, but in 1944 he became Captain Norman Herold of the 2nd Bomber Group, 49th Bomber Squadron. While away, he wrote to his parents, grandparents, and sister in Baltimore, Maryland. Towards the end of the war, he wrote, “Things won’t be very much longer over here. Another month or so and it will end, but you can guarantee it will be over this year, that’s for sure. Whether we’ll go home from here or to the Pacific I don’t know but here’s hoping its home for a few months.” While in the war Norman got the opportunity to visit Rome and other parts of Italy. Also in this collection of letters Howard and Charles Herold, Norman’s relatives write to the same address that he does. Norman Herold died in January 1983 at the age of 74.
