Sunday afternoon,

Dear Folks:

Your candy arrived here Saturday morning.  That was the one you sent by special handling.  You should not have sent it that way because all special mail, special delivery, and such doesn’t get to us any faster.  Ordinary mail is the best in the long run.  Special delivery or special handling just waste your money.  So save the money and treat yourself to a movie or something.

As usual we are having a very lazy day. The sun is out very strong and it is like the middle of summer.  We are going around in our shirt sleeves.  I took some pictures yesterday and will send them to you as soon as they are developed.  They say it takes about a week so don’t expect them too soon.  Helen’s cake arrived in very good shape but sure disappeared in a hurry.  It tasted swell and the boys and I sure enjoyed it.  It was still fresh and we really gobbled it down.  Between the cakes and candy, you sure are fattening me up and I will have to cut down. Please don’t send anymore or else I won’t be able to move.  I will be as fat as a pig.  I have a pint of ice cream every night up here which only costs fifteen cents.  It is good cream too and very tasty.

We had some god news about our quarantine.  They told us that it would be over by Tuesday if no more cases showed up.  None will, I am quite sure, since we have physical examinations every day.  There were only three cases anyhow and the outlook is good.  So maybe I can get to see Bill Walton and take in a movie.  I got a note from Bill by the way and know where he is located.  We will get together soon.

That fellow Herald Clark, who was mentioned by Helen should be back in Patenan now.  His wife was very sick and he was given a fifteen-day pass.  I understand the chaplain got him a ride in an army plane to Newark, which would only cost him $1.00.  Another fellow from St. Johns, Bill Hayes, was called back to the hospital on Saturday for a check-up.  He had been in there about two weeks ago.

Say by the way, I am a professional bed-maker.  Two fellows have asked me to make their beds every morning and are paying me $1.00 each a week.  So you see my bed-making is really good.  They can’t seem to get theirs done in time so I do it for them.  It is easy money and pays for my ice cream very nicely.

Don’t send the radio or camera because I haven’t moved to my permanent battery as yet. When I finally get located I will ask you for them if I want them.

So long for now,

Joe
