Sun. 5 PM –

Dear mom,

I got back from my 3-day pass to S.F. about 4:30 A.M. Today, slept until 10 A.M., went to church this A.M., read my mail this afternoon (5 letters), went to a ball game and now I am ready to start answering some letters. I also plan to turn in pretty early and catch up with some sleep.

Enjoyed your letter and I am glad to hear that everything is doing so well at home and trust it continues so. Maybe you will make a big crop this year if the seasons are right.

Jim Joe and I were together again and had another big time in the “big-city.” One day it rained (drizzled) most of the day and about all we could so was go to shows, but yesterday was pretty and we got to see lots of more interesting sites. We went out to this $1,000,000.00 Zoo, but found that it was [not] any better than Memphis – not even as good. We wove our wool clothes & a wool undershirt this time and kept much warmer. Nearly everybody in the Division is getting a 3-day pass, so lots of wild-cats were in town. However, it’s a “nary” town and they are really there!
This last week was nothing but a vacation! I was in town 3 days and the other 4 were spent doing absolutely nothing. We are just killing time until we leave here which looks as if it will be in 10 days to 2 weeks – no doubt we are heading for Hawaii, thou’ we don’t know yet. If we do we will probably have jungle training there, as that’s all we’ve missed so far.

It’s pretty here to day and hot as the dickens! The grass is beginning to turn brown. Around here they have their “green season” during the wet winter months. Sounds funny, but that’s the way it is!

Glad the mule got O.K. It would be tough to lose one now. Also, hope you enjoy the oil stove. You were lucky to find one.

Robbie Tyson had written me about the Church acquiring more property. Looks like there is always something to buy in the Church there, but no doubt it was a good buy. It’s nice that the church continues to grow.

The boys seem to be doing fine in Italy. Looks like Rome will be over soon! Hope the big “invasion” turns out as well – or better!

Us wise-men start to Radio school in the A.M., for how long we don’t know. This is a “school-going” Army. We also may have to take a 25-mile hike soon which is much to look forward to!

Did Joe & Tommy catch any fish? Wish I could do a little myself. Not much chance for a furlough thou’!

That’s about all I know now, so take care of yourself & write again soon.

                                                                                    Love –

                                                                                                Russell
