Edward A. Chester was born circa 1913 in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Army in 1942. During "Eddie's" service, he corresponded with his sweetheart, Fran, and they eventually married. Chester was a private and he trained as a sharpshooter. After his training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, he was stationed in Japan. Regarding the occupation, he said, "They keep drilling into our minds that...Japan must be policed and we're the fellows that's going to do it...."
