Sat. morning

Sept. 29th

My dear Fran: -

Well its about 6:30 so I’ll get a letter started, it will probably be tonight before its finished. I received three letters from you yesterday and also my long lost package. The time is growing shorter and I getting mighty impatient. I’m glad you’re coming down with Mrs. D. because its a long trip to make by yourself. You asked me how much money you should bring well you’ll have to use your own judgement about that I suppose you should have 40 or 50 dollars at least but you bring as much as you want. I received the three dollars, thanks a million it come in very handy as I was broke. I’m calling the guest house today and if I get in town today I’ll look around for a room. When you arrive in Macon you will have to take a Camp Wheeler bus and tell the driver you want to get off at number one guest house its at number one gate and then I’ll meet you there when I finish my days training around 6 to 6:30 o’clock. Thursday I told you our company and “A” company was on Pickett range firing record fire on the B.A.R. Well yesterday “C” and “D” company went out and a boy from “C” company was shot right through the heart so I guess they will make quite a stink about a trainee being killed in peace time. Its very unsafe working in those pits pulling tarkets I know because I did it the day before.

SUN. MORNING

Honey I know exactly how you feel after that phone call last [night] I assure you it is very dissappointing but like I said over the phone when the Army says you do something you simply do it and say nothing. I had an interview with a Capt. Saturday morning and they selected me and one other man from our whole company. He thinks its quite a break and I suppose it is since I go to school for 6 months and get some sort of a rating. Better than that honey it will only take a few hours to get home so I can see my honey a lot more often than if I stayed down here. Just in case you forgot the outfit its the Counter Intelligence Corp. the biggest part of the time we are dressed in civilian clothes. It may give me a good break when I get out of the service but that remains to be seen. Maybe you can go back to work for about two weeks then take the two weeks you were going to spend down here and come to Maryland because I still want you with me. Maybe you can find a nice job in Maryland and spend all six months with me since I’ll probably go across after completing my schooling. I certainly hope not but they aren’t giving me this schooling for nothing. I sent a booklet to you yesterday they were given to every trainee and he could send it to whom ever he liked. It is entitled “I Am A Doughboy”, I have written under several of the pictures giving you an idea of the training we’ve been going through. In the back of this book are autographs of all the boys in our platoon. After you have looked it over good pass it on to my folks to look at I don’t mean for them to keep it I want you to keep it. I couldn’t get but one so thats why I didn’t send them one. When they ship me to Fort Meade I’m going to try and come on home but understand I only said try. I’ll see what goes when I hit camp. If it’s a week end I may wire you to meet me in Phila. then we could spend the week end together but please don’t make a lot of plans just wait until you hear from me. Yesterday morning we had one hour of close order drill, one hour of physical training, a movie for one hour and last but not least another shot. I think that was the last of the shots, I hope. Next week starts our ninth week and thats spent entirely on the 30 Cal. machine gun so I don’t know how much of that I will get. Honey you keep on writing to me right here and as soon as I notify you I’m leaving then you can stop until I write you my next address. If there’s any mail on the way at the time they will forward it to me. I forgot to tell you Joe and myself went in town late yesterday afternoon but didn’t do a thing besides drink beer and visit the U.S.O.

Well dear I think I’ll bring this letter to a close for today so keep writing me and remember I love you, always, be good. Tell your folks and my friends I said hello.

With all my love,

Your honey.

P.S.

The pictures didn’t turn out but we are taking more today.

(OVER)

Just disregard all I have written in pencil since I didn’t know I was leaving when I wrote it.
