Nov. 3, 1943. Letter # 1

My Darling Jeanette,

I am feeling about as well as usual now dearest, except for my cold. That is getting better slowly though so I will be over by this weekend about. I wrote to you in my last letter about me going to the hospital for a few days to have a small operation on my hand to cut out a growth in the palm of my right hand. If everything is all right I shall go this Friday I guess. I’ll probably be there over the weekend at least. It should not be more. Then I should have to go back there every day for a while to have it dressed, the doctor said. Capt. V, my executive office, is out for a few days and it depends whether he gets back by the end of the week as to whether I shall go this weekend or next week. It is really nothing much though so it is nothing to worry about.

I hope that you are feeling fine, my dear, and that all of both of our families are also.

Yesterday I received two letters from you and was pleased to get them as always. They are your Oct. 21st letter, #14 and Oct. 23rd letter, and #15. That is not a bad time at all. I was surprised to hear that you received one of my letters from England also almost a year after it was written. I looked on my list of letters and saw I did not have that one marked as relieved by you before and also the same for the ones written to the folks on that day.

Was surprised to here that Mr. Casey was not so well. It is correct; he is on the County Civil Service Commission. I enjoyed working with him also on the City Civil Service Commission wanting it otherwise. He, Mr. Guilfoyle, and I always got along well together on the whole, in spite of the mayor wanting it otherwise. How do you like your new home service Secretary now? But I guess you have probably answered that question in later letters already. You should have found out what unit that ex service man was in over here and what his name was. I could then check to see if he was ever around these parts. You said he was in an ordinance unit over here.

I suppose you have received my regular airmail letter by now written on Oct. 8th. As I said to you then, I felt like writing a regular letter that day. You mentioned meeting the many different classes and types of people. You will have to take some notes so you can remember to tell me about some of them when I get back. I guess my letters and map will have to refresh my memory about what I’ve done. I haven’t kept a diary. We are not supposed to put anything in it about our work and the balance of what I would put in it is in my letters so they act as a good diary as far as that goes. You mentioned Aunt Minnie writing to you. Remember me to her the next time you write to her, and thank her for her well wishes.

No I haven’t received any copies of the House of Beautiful yet. They are slow in coming. You will have to save your copies, any I will mention, and articles I want you to keep special attention of. You can make a small list of the articles and the subject and keep it on file so we can look them up easily when I get back. Will you buy for me one each of any stamps which come out and keep them for me? Be sure they are well-centered and no straight edges. I noticed some new ones with the flags of different allies on them in color on a package, which came for one of the men today. Stop by a stamp store and get a list of all the new ones since 1940 (including then) and buy one each of any since then from the post office (or the stamp store if they are no longer on sale at the post office.) Be sure they are well centered. To get back on the subject, I’ll read that article especially that you mentioned in the Nov. issue of House Beautiful. Will write you more in answer to your second letter tomorrow night, about the house and things you mentioned about it.

Sweetheart I look forward only to that day that we shall be together once more and then secondly you said, in our own home again.

With all my love to you darling.
