Letter #1

My darling,

Another Friday rolls around and another week about over. But a new month started and one more nearer the time we shall be together again my dear. It seems as though I write you in every letter that I miss you, darling, and that I’ll be glad when the time comes for me to go back home. That is the way I feel all the time though, darling, so I hope you will bear with me if I write it after.

This afternoon I received your letter #12 of Sept 25th. It was as welcome as are all of your letters dear. Letter #11 has not come yet but probably will tomorrow. Also I didn’t get a cable today but probably will in the morning.

As I wrote you Tuesday, I received letter #10 on that day and have all this then now. I received the folks letter of the 18th and 20th them also and wrote them last night. However I found the letter in my letter case when I brought it back to my billow tonight. I forgot to mail it this AM so will mail it with yours in the morning.

Well time out for a mi to about the blackout curtains as it is 7:30 PM, now blackout time. It gets dark early each night. By the end of October it will be dark by 6:30 and blackout won’t be off until 7:30 in the morning. They say in now. Dec Jan Feb – we go to work in the dark and home back in the dark. In the winter it is dark until 8:30 or 9 AM. You see we are farther north than you and have longer summer (?) days and shorter winter days. (That question mark for the cool months normally called summer in civilized countries) where they have a summer.

My last letter for last month was #12. My letter, writing to folks, other than you and mother and dad, has been very bad. I’ll try to do better for all the other letters I owe you but you know how I don’t like to write. Also then if things ever change, I might not be able to write so often or so much.

First to answer you letter, dear. The prince Harry Cole is charging to do the work is very steep for two rooms. I supposed it is all right even with extra expenses and all but I think he is soaking you plenty war or no war. I doubt if I’ll ever have him do any work for me when I get back after the way I felt when I got his bill for the other two rooms and I still feel the same about $125 for these two: Be sure he does the ceilings in the bedroom too at that prove. And he had ought to throw in the other two ceilings he welched out of in 1940.

How I wish I could be there with you this fall darling, as you describe it in your letter. How well I recall the rides we used to take in the fall when the leaves were turning all their beautiful colors. Then the first cool evenings by the fireplace with a nice log burning brightly. The Halloween party we had with the cells all trimmed up. The weekends we went up to the folk’s camp, when they had it, and got it all warm with a large fire. Our trips to Canada. There were many things we died to make the fall enjoyable and full of happiness for both of us.

As I write you now I set back in my easy chair here in the front of the gas burner in the fireplace and dream over those happy times I have mentioned and of many more. My eyes and throat both fill up as I think of them so far away and of my darling wife and I separated this fall. I pray to God that we may be together again when another fall comes round. Dearest, I miss you so at times, I cannot tell you by mere words in writing how hard it is to be without you.

I hope you are well as ever, sweetheart and that our folks are also. I’m feeling about as well as usual myself. I had one of my headaches this after noon bit it is about gone now. And I don’t have them way after.

I’m going to get a new pair of glasses soon – one that will fit on under a gas mask as I can’t wear these present ones under it. Every one who wears glasses, who wishes, can get a pair free of charge. We have to wear our gas marks once a week for half an hour for practice too, by the way.

You were speaking about eating plates home reminds me – we have a cork in over mess who cooked in Jack Demprey’s Resturant in N.Y.C. before he was drafted.

Darling I pray too we will be together before many more months pass by. It will be certainly wonderful when that time comes. I’m sure there will be no one guy happier than we are going to be.

I’m enclosing from more handkerchiefs about which I wrote you, darling. The three alike are #7 pattern and the one is # 6 pattern. I hope you have my letter of Sept 25th by now telling you about them and enclosing the check & some of the handkerchiefs. Also my letters of the 27 and 29th.  And did you get the postal card in my letter of the 20th and the L moto in my letter of the 22nd, for your money collection. That L note is worth $4 so don’t lose it. And that card was very interesting too so take good care of it.

I have bought 6 men’s linen handkerchiefs each for dad, father Westcott and grandpa Klock and am having their initials put on. I’ll send them next week with those I bought for you and mother. They are all for Christmas presents so put them away until then. (That is all except your six, dear, which are for you birthday). I’m getting them all sent early so they will be out of the way, in case.

Also I did not get the little package out for you yet, I had for your anniversary present. It is all wrapped and is going tomorrow airmail as it was not already to send Wednesday.

Well dear guess I’ll close for now, as I want to get a bath and wash my hair tonight and it is nine PM now.

All of my love to you my dear in this letter as it was an hour ago by my dear in this letter as it was an hour ago by my thoughts. All my kisses too, to a wonderful wife.

                                                            I love you dearly, sweetheart

                                                                        Your husband,

                                                                                    Carlton
