Dear Douglas:

I understand from your letters you seem to be enjoying the best of life. However, I’m glad you were so fortunate to be in with a good outfit. Also glad to hear you have completed your field test, which sounded interesting. They seem to be liberal with their leaves to allow you to go to town nearly ever night. I’m glad you mention about the USO because I always heard that the soldiers were not receiving much from them at all.

Well, Douglas, Clifford is five and half months old. How the time flies. Margaret sends her best regards to you and so does her sister Irma, and family. Here’s some news that will knock you off your feet. Andy has been shipped to Sicily. Upon my visit to his mother’s house last Sunday I was informed of this bad news. He only received a three day leave because his mother was very ill. Was drafted on December 24, 1942 and shipped sometime in May. You can consider yourself very fortunate Douglas.

Douglas the training you are now receiving I think ought to end up with bars on your shoulders. What do you think? I am now attending night school again, three nights a week. Just to keep me out of mischief. I am also intending to take a course in accounting together with my typing, shorthand and spelling.

I guess I’ll end now Douglas and hoping that this letter finds you in the best of health and may I have a reply from you in the near future.

                                                                        Your Pal,

                                                                        Charlie
